What Makes A Snack “Healthy”
A healthy snack includes:
- Protein, which keeps you full and satisfied
- Carbohydrates, to provide your body with the energy it needs (choosing a high fiber carbohydrate is best)
- A small amount of healthy fats, to support a healthy functioning brain and body
If you have these 3 components (protein, carbs, and fat) in your snack you are more likely to stabilize your blood sugar levels and decrease hunger than if you consumed a snack with only one of these components.
For example, consuming whole grain crackers (carbohydrate) with cheese (protein and fat) VS consuming the crackers alone (carbohydrate). The reason why including protein, carbohydrates, and fat into your snack results in increased feelings of fullness and less overeating is because all of these food components together slow down digestion and therefore slow down the release of glucose (sugar) into your bloodstream. Creating a more sustained and subtle blood glucose (sugar) increase and decrease. With less intense blood glucose (sugar) spikes, comes feelings of satisfaction and fullness.
For snacks that are prepackaged, like the ones I’m showcasing today, it’s important to check the ingredient list to ensure that the list contains ingredients that you can understand. Whole plant-based food options are best to look for on a nutrition label. You can also watch out for any added sugars and high sodium-containing foods by looking at the nutrition label.
